Kamala Harris
Vice President of the United States
Kamala Devi Harris was born in October 1964 in Oakland, California. She earned an undergraduate degree in political science and economics from Howard University and received a Juris Doctor from the University of California Hastings College of Law.
She was deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California, serving ten years as a prosecutor. She worked at San Francisco City Hall running the Family and Children’s Services Division. She was elected District Attorney for San Francisco where she served eight years. Harris served eight more years as Attorney General of California. She was elected to the United States Senate and assumed her seat in January 2017.
She entered the 2020 presidential election as a candidate but withdrew in December 2019. In August 2020, presidential candidate Joe Biden announced he had chosen Harris to be his vice president. She was the first African-American, the first Indian-American, and the third woman to be picked as the vice-presidential nominee for a major party ticket. She assumed office in January 2021.
Harris is married to Doug Emhoff, and she is stepmother to his two children from a previous marriage. She is a Baptist.

In an address to the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Unity Summit, Vice President Kamala Harris said the coronavirus presents an “opportunity” to “transform” American life.
“As we emerge from the pandemic, I believe that we are at the start of a new era,” she said. “I believe that we have a unique opportunity now to shape our nation’s future. To transform how we live, how we work, and how we vote.”
The vice president emphasized the importance of members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in the election process and in the nation’s society. She also commended the recently passed legislation regarding Asian American hate crimes.
“Asian Americans have the right to be recognized as American. Not as the ‘other.’ Not as ‘them,’ but as ‘us,’” she said. “In America, I do believe a harm against any one of us is a harm against all of us, and we should all then recognize that interconnection between each of us.”
